Vision Training For Ice Skating

Ice skating is a sport that requires extreme levels of precision and body control, and, during performances, skaters only have one chance to get it right. Therefore, improving vision skills that can help one’s performance are vital.

Core Visual Skills

While there are a number of vision skills that are important for ice skaters, some are more crucial to performance than others.

Core vision skills for ice skaters include:

  • Hand-Eye-Foot-Body Coordination: Ice skating, with all its complex movements, is a sport which requires incredibly precise body control. Elite coordination is a must for anyone trying to compete at high levels.
  • Depth Perception: Ice skating routines often include jumps where the skater is airborne for significant periods of time. Proper depth perception is vital for being able to time the jumps, and, more importantly, the landings effectively.
  • Timing and Rhythm: Ice skating routines require great precision, and are often set to music. Improving a skater’s ability to properly time their movements can provide the edge needed to compete at elite levels.
  • Visual Sequential Memory: Ice skaters in competitions only get one shot at nailing their routines. Therefore, improving their sequential memory ability can be key to making sure they remember what must be done at each point.

Secondary Visual Skills

Secondary visual skills for ice skaters aren’t necessarily any less important than core visual skills, though they are not quite as central to what is needed for an ice skater to be successful.

  • Visual Concentration: Ice skating competitions often take place in large arenas with big crowds in attendance. A skater’s ability to focus on the visual task at hand can make the difference when performing a complicated routine.
  • Visualization: As with many other sports, visualization, the ability to see yourself performing a particular move, genuinely helps enable you to actually pull it off when the time comes. Ice skating routines are full of complicated movements which improved visualization can help a skater pull off when in the spotlight.

  • Such a nice optician. My grandson is only 4 and needs glasses. We were so sad, but he explained the issues, and we will follow up as he suggested.

  • Dr. Zurcher has gone above and beyond what any other eye doctor has ever done to figure out what is going on with my eyes. Very happy with American Family Vision.

  • Family Vision Clinic changed our lives! My daughter was frequently car sick, and she was getting headaches every day, often painful enough that they brought her to tears. We saw a string of doctors and therapists, but we made no progress. Finally, we found Dr. Levi Zurcher and his eye therapist Rain. After ten weeks of eye therapy my daughter no longer gets headaches, and she no longer gets car sick. Daily tears are a thing of the past. I really can’t say enough about this clinic. It was fascinating to watch Dr. Zurcher work. For the first time, someone who knew what they were doing was intently studying my daughter, really trying to figure out all of her eye issues, and his therapist Rain is one of the most patient and lovely people that I’ve ever had the good fortune to meet. We’re finished with eye therapy—yay!—and I have switched to American Family Vision Clinic for all of my family’s other eye health needs.

  • Very professional, yet kind and helpful. They do what they can to make the appointment comfortable. I was running a bit late, I made sure ti call. They were able to switch me with a patient who was already there, they treated me with respect, and helped my son have confidence by getting him the eye care he needed that day. Thank you so much! Would recommend to anyone. It's a blessing that they care enough to work with people who have all different types of insurance from work to state coverage.
